Celebrating UIC Student Fathers: Strength, Purpose & Hope

By Melinda Young, Program Coordinator

This June, in honor of Father’s Day, we are proud to spotlight five remarkable UIC student fathers who exemplify resilience, dedication, and love. Their journeys are a testament to the strength and determination it takes to balance the demands of parenthood with academic pursuits.

This spring, I had the privilege of attending the HOPE 2025 conference in National Harbor, Maryland, hosted by Generation Hope. The event was a powerful gathering of student parents, educators, policymakers, and advocates, all committed to reimagining higher education to better support parenting students (Generation Hope).

One session that deeply resonated with me was the opening plenary titled "From the Experts — Fatherhood, Determination, and College Dreams." Speakers like Kevin Platero and Raheem Jackson shared their experiences as student fathers, challenging prevailing narratives and highlighting the need for inclusive support systems. A poignant theme from the conference was the assertion that "our children are not the barriers—the systems are." This perspective urges us to shift our focus from viewing parenting responsibilities as obstacles to recognizing the systemic changes needed in higher education to accommodate and support student parents effectively (Michelson 20MM).

In this newsletter, we feature the stories of five UIC student fathers who embody these themes. Their narratives highlight the challenges they've overcome, the support systems they've built, and the dreams they pursue—not just for themselves, but for their children.

\"Peculiar

Peculiar Onyekere
PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences

"I wanted my children to see that challenges are not roadblocks, but stepping stones. That faith, excellence, and sacrifice can beautifully coexist with love, laughter, and purpose. Being honored twice with the UIC Chancellor Student Leadership Award and serving as a UIC Global Ambassador only strengthened my resolve: to make my impact count not only through my research, but across the UIC campus and broader community. As the first in my family to attend graduate school, I carry the hopes of a generation and the belief that when purpose meets perseverance, the impossible becomes possible. One scripture that has strengthened me through it all is Joshua 1:9—"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." My family, especially my amazing wife, has not been a limitation, but one of my greatest anchors. In fact, inspired by our journey, she also enrolled in nursing school, and together we’ve navigated this demanding yet beautiful season."
Advice to other parenting students:
"To every student-parent, first-generation scholar, or anyone juggling family and academic life: don’t give up. You are not behind. You are building something greater than you can imagine. Let your story rise as proof that it’s possible to be ambidextrous—excelling in both career and calling, home and purpose, vision and legacy. Take advantage of the University resources and support systems available as you navigate the journey. Seek Advisors and mentors who will understand you and help you walk through the journey. Most importantly, trust God to help you pull through!"

Mohamed Mohamed
PhD Program

"I enjoyed my journey of education and wanted to extend it to an MSc. degree and then a PhD. These degrees have widened my knowledge and experience. On the other hand, I believe in the concept of family and these social bonds that support me through my life journey. Although having 2 children while doing my PhD as an international student is very challenging, they provide me with hope. The best thing in my life is seeing them grow up beside me."
Advice to other parenting students:
"... having children is really challenging and needs effort, but it's worth it after you see them grow up and get your degree."

\"Aaron

Aaron Booker
Bachelor’s in Nutrition Science

When asked what inspired him to pursue higher education while raising a family, Aaron stated, "After 11 years of Navy service, I decided to raise a family. I wanted a stable home life."
Advice to other parenting students:
"Be patient, be open, be teachable, and continue to be of service."

\"Timothy,

Timothy Idowu
Master’s in Construction Engineering and Management

"My wife and I welcomed our child while she was in the early stages of her PhD program at UIC. Together, we juggled coursework, research, and parenting in a new environment far from extended family and familiar support systems. It wasn’t always easy—there were moments of exhaustion, self-doubt, and sacrifice—but those moments also taught me the value of time, focus, and perseverance. Despite the challenges, being a student father has deepened my sense of purpose. I am not just studying for myself—I am building a future for my family. That mindset has helped me stay grounded, even during the busiest semesters. It’s also helped me appreciate the little things: a quiet evening with my child, a shared laugh with my wife, or a productive day on campus. UIC has been a crucial part of this journey. The support from faculty, access to resources like Campus Care, and a growing community of fellow student parents have made a real difference. I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help, to take breaks, and to celebrate small wins."
Advice to other parenting students:
"To fellow student fathers: you are not alone. Balancing school and parenting is tough, but it’s also a powerful testimony of resilience. Your efforts matter—both in your family and in the classroom. Keep going, and know that your story is worth sharing."

\"Jonathan

Jonathan Aleman
Bachelor’s in Kinesiology & Nutrition

"This past spring, I proudly graduated with my degree in Kinesiology and Nutrition, a goal that took years of perseverance and the support of incredible systems and people around me. Now, I’m even more inspired and committed than ever to continue using my education and voice to uplift others, especially fellow parents who are pursuing their dreams while raising their families."
Advice to other parenting students:
"Do it! We only get one life, and if going back to school is something that’s been on your heart, now is the perfect time. Speaking from experience, the journey is 100% worth the investment of time and energy. It will definitely challenge you; however, it will also become one of the most meaningful and rewarding experiences of your life. There are also many resources available, such as grants, scholarships, and programs like Little Sparks, that can help ease the pressure of parenting while you pursue your education. You and your child can grow and learn together, and that’s the most beautiful part."
