Albany Park Community Center (APCC) is always looking for motivated, responsible, and compassionate individuals to lend a hand in many of our programs. We are confident you will find volunteering with APCC to be a very rewarding experience! Tutor English as a Second Language (ESL) or Adult Basic Education (ABE). Commit to six months of tutoring an adult in English, reading or math, following 12 hours of free training. Volunteers are also needed to tutor adults in citizenship preparation or in pre-employment literacy and computer skills. Training is on Saturdays while tutoring is usually twice a week for two hours per session, times and can be between: 9:00 am - 9:30 pm Monday through Thursday, and 9:00 am - 5:30 pm on Saturdays

Alpha Phi Gamma emerged in the Fall of 1993 and became a reality on February 1, 1994, as
the first Asian American Interest Sorority on the campus of California State Polytechnic
University, Pomona. The Founders were Allex Choi, Candy Cunanan, Christine Nguyen, Sandie
Rillera, Kolleen Kim, Grace Hsieh and Jennifer Oku. These Sisters wanted to bring together all
women of different nationalities through the bonds of friendship and sisterhood. The sorority
was established to promote service and Asian Awareness to the University and to the
community, allowing for all the different nationalities to discover what other cultures had to offer.
As with the beginning of any organization, Alpha Phi Gamma has started to grow in order to be
able to have a strong impact in the future. Since 1993, our Sisterhood bonds have grown
internally and formed foundations in California, Illinois, Missouri, Arizona, New York, Kansas,
Michigan, Colorado, Nevada, and Minnesota. Seeing our Sisterhood grow over the years is
exciting, but more important is that Alpha Phi Gamma has been able to maintain our values and
bonds across all our schools. As we continue to grow our Sisters will continue to uphold the
values and bonds of our Sisterhood all women of different nationalities, in our communities and
universities.

The American Medical Women’s Association – UICOM (AMWA – UICOM) is an organization of women physicians, medical students and other persons dedicated to serving as the unique voice for women’s health and the advancement of women in medicine. The organization was founded by Dr. Bertha VanHoosen in 1915 in Chicago, at a time when women physicians were an under-represented minority. As women in medicine increase in numbers, so have new issues that were not anticipated, and AMWA has been working to address these issues as they arise.

The mission of AMWA is to empower women, promote equality, and raise awareness about women’s health and women in medicine. AMWA is the oldest multispecialty organization dedicated to advancing women in medicine and improving women’s health. The American Medical Women’s Association empowers women to lead in improving health for all within a model that reflects the unique perspective of women.

The mission of the American Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. When disaster strikes, Red Cross volunteers are there to provide food, shelter, essential relief supplies and hope to individuals displaced by fires, floods, and storms. They provide health and mental health services following local and national disasters, and they support the international community when called upon. When military recruits prepare to leave for military service, Red Cross volunteers are there with them, explaining how the Red Cross will support them and their families throughout their military career and beyond. The Red Cross is one of the nation’s largest blood collection organizations. Red Cross volunteers help with the collection and distribution of over 40% of the nation’s blood supply. Our volunteers are as diverse as the people receiving Red Cross services. It takes all kinds of men and women to make this organization work - all ages, backgrounds, and skills.

The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) empowers pharmacists and pharmacy students to enhance quality of care for the geriatric population through the appropriate use of medication and the promotion of healthy aging. Students support and actively participate in projects to advance senior care pharmacy, including giving topic presentations about falls prevention, osteoporosis, medication safety, and more. The ASCP UIC-Student Chapter organizes monthly Medication Therapy Management events at a senior living home to promote quality geriatric care. Speakers are invited to UIC COP to present various topics relating to consultant pharmacy and inform students on ways to get involved. In addition, ASCP partners with Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly to raise awareness and relieve isolation among the Chicago elderly.

AARCC offers social, cultural, and educational programs that promote knowledge on Asian Americans. Our co-curricular programs enhance the UIC experience and provide opportunities for integrated learning and development

Asian American Students in Alliance (AASIA) is the oldest Asian American organization at UIC, founded as a Pan-Asian organization in 1987. We aim to increase Asian American awareness and address issues surrounding the Asian American community through our cultural workshops, events, performances, services, and social gatherings.

For patients with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, and other life-threatening diseases, a cure exists. Be the Match operates a registry that matches patients with lifesaving blood stem cell donors. Over 20 million people have joined the registry, however, there are still over 12,000 patients in need of lifesaving matches. Joining the registry takes only a few minutes and involves a fast digital form and cheek swabs that are mailed. ( When we are able to gather, we hold tabling drives and educate students/the public and sign them up in person.) The entire process is very simple and can be completed in just a few minutes. 1 in 430 people who register will one day match a patient and save a life, and donating is not painful, most often resembling blood donation. Only 30% of patients have a match in the family, and patients are most likely to match donors who share their ethnicity. Unfortunately, there is a disparity in the registry and all patients do not have an equal chance of finding a lifesaving match. Most of the donors who have joined the registry are Caucasian, so Caucasian patients have a much better chance of finding a match. Currently, a White patient has a 77% chance of finding a matching donor on the registry, however Hispanic, Asian and African American patients have only a 46%, 41% and 23% chance respectively. This is one of the largest disparities in medicine and we are fighting intensely to change those odds. It is the goal of Be the Match for all patients to have an equal chance of finding their match, regardless of their ethnicity. Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in late 1992 by Kathleen A. Casey, CEO/President. The foundation is named in memory of her eight-year-old son, Barrett “Bear” Krupa, who died after a courageous five and a half year battle with Wilms Tumor, a pediatric cancer. Prior to his death on January 9, 1993, Bear and his mother discussed and planned the formation of Bear Necessities. During his long stay in the hospital, Bear expressed more concern for other pediatric cancer patients than he did for himself. He and his mother learned of the many hidden needs of both patient, family members, and the needs of the hospital facilities as well. Today, Bear Necessities operates two unique programs, Bear Hugs and Bear Discoveries. While the Foundation is funding cutting-edge research to end pediatric cancer, it’s also providing for the immediate needs of the children and families battling the disease.

MISSION The mission of BEDS Plus Care is to help vulnerable individuals stabilize their lives through housing and supportive services. VISION Our vision is to end homelessness. We believe that everyone deserves a home. BEDS Plus Care delivers emergency services, including overnight shelter, housing services and homelessness prevention to reduce and end homelessness in Southwest Suburban Cook County. Each client who comes to BEDS is either literally homeless or their housing is threatened. Each situation has its own complex causes and requires individualized care. Professional case managers work with clients on individual service plans to help them secure affordable housing, stabilize, and rejoin their communities. We connect our clients with other agencies to address the needs of special populations, including families with children; seniors; veterans; domestic violence survivors; and people with disabilities. With help from professional and lay volunteers, we provide meals and food, routine health screenings, physician and behavioral health referrals, legal counsel, employment support groups and other wrap-around supports.

Students (Littles) are matched 1:1 with a mentor (Bigs) to form a positive mentoring relationship. During outings, Bigs and Littles do activities that provide children with the opportunity to discover a world of possibilities and support a child’s confidence, competence, and independence. The time commitment is 2-4 outings per month, for a minimum of a year. Program Description: The Bigs will pick up their Littles from their home and take them on outings that will impact the Little in three areas: Educational Achievement, Social-Emotional Competencies, and Avoidance of Risk Taking Behavior. Some examples of activities the matches can enjoy on their own are: visiting the zoo, trying new food, sightseeing downtown, learning a new craft, playing in the park, visiting a college campus. Throughout the year, BBBS will host events that will introduce the Little to various educational, career, and fun activities. The parent and child must be engaged in the full enrollment process - participate in family orientation, interview, and monthly match support phone calls. The family must have an active phone number and stable housing where the parent and child can be reached. This program is city-wide and is individualized to each Big and Little. The program starts on a rolling basis and commitment begins after first match introduction.

We collaborate and consult with other campus units to ensure that the needs of Asian American students are met. In line with the Great Cities Commitment, AARCC cultivates connections between UIC and Chicago’s Asian American communities, serving as a resource for the campus to engage with off-campus Asian American organizations. AARCC is open to all members of the UIC campus and the surrounding community who have an interest in issues relevant to Asian Americans.

Chi Sigma Tau is the first Asian American interest fraternity to have been founded in the Midwest. We establish lifelong brotherhood, develop leadership skills, institute a mentor program for the younger members, promote Asian awareness by bringing a voice to the Asian American community on campus, and work to expand our unique style of brotherhood to other campuses. Although we were founded as an Asian interest fraternity, Chi Sigma Tau is non-exclusive and openly welcomes potential members from all walks of life. We are all like-minded people and strive to achieve the same goals: graduate, expand the fraternity, and develop our leadership capabilities - in essence, to become better rounded men with honor, integrity and selflessness. Our members take a life-long pledge of loyalty to the Fraternity. During the undergraduate years, members partake in numerous programs that culminate them into a more well rounded man - from a social aspects at formal functions to the business aspects of running an organization. Both will be vital to their success after graduation, members will work with fellow alumni to improve the collegiate chapters as well as their community. By doing so, they further foster their bond of brotherhood.

Chi Sigma Tau takes pride in being part of National APIDA Panhellenic Association, also known as NAPA. NAPA is a national insurance that includes different Asian interest fraternities and sororities that help these organization to better themselves and work together to advocate, collaborate, and educate ourselves for the members and community. NAPA supports the development of positive relations through open communication with interfraternal partners to enrich the fraternal experience.

The Fraternity has grown throughout the years; from a single chapter with ten original Brothers to nine strong chapters with over 400+ brothers. It continues to grow and evolve. As more chapters are established, more ideas are incorporated. As more Brothers are forged, the stronger the bond, the bigger the network.

Chi-Care is an inclusive organization aimed at providing people who are homeless and need help the most with warm food, clean water and other resources where they live.We plan to grow the organization by obtaining a large vehicle to make delivering more food easier. Chi-Care is also focused on increasing the number of days per week that it operates.Food and water are rarely enough for an unsheltered person during a Chicago winter. Chi-Care intends to begin a clothing drive to provide coats, hats, and gloves.Chi-Care depends on its volunteers and donations to help people. A small monthly donation of $10 can help to provide up to four meals, assist in the purchase of a truck for deliveries, or pay for professional grant writing services that will bring even more resources to those in need.

LOVE BOX PROGRAM The Love Box program provides fostering families (caregivers, children in foster care, and biological/adopted children) with community and holistic support. This wrap-around support enables caregivers to continue to do the important and meaningful work of being foster parents. As a Love Box group, you will be matched with a local foster family based on location, compatibility, and scope of needs. When our families are matched with committed volunteers who show up monthly, parents feel supported and children gain a greater sense of normalcy, relational permanency, and self confidence. This program requires a one year commitment, but the connections and impact last a lifetime. DARE TO DREAM The youth (ages 11-22) in our Dare to Dream program need the wisdom, advice, encouragement, and community that mentors can provide. Mentors meet practical and emotional needs as well as provide guidance through developmental milestones. The goal is for youth to be engaged and to feel supported and equipped to navigate life. A mentor commits to meeting with the youth every other week to set goals and help them achieve their dreams. These relationships will hopefully last a lifetime, but the program is a year commitment. Mentors matched with a high school student are strongly encouraged to stay with the youth until high school graduation.

The Chicago Lights Tutoring Program serves over 400 children in 1st -12th grades from the near north, west and south sides of Chicago. The program runs Monday-Thursday from 6:00pm-7:30pm from October-May at 126 E. Chestnut St, downtown Chicago. We are looking for volunteers who can serve as a one-to-one, permanent tutor to join us! The United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) is a national academic competition. The Chicago Public Schools has the largest number of student participants than any school district in the nation. At CPS, approximately 70 high schools compete; each school has a nine-member team. Each team has three students with an A average, three with a B average and three with a C average. Every year, students are tested in 7 academic areas and the USAD offers three levels of competition (honors, scholastic, and varsity) as teams advance through the process of competitive elimination. CPS students compete in two citywide competitions and the citywide winner then progresses to the state competition. The culminating event is the national competition where students compete against other state championship teams. Goals Develop and provide academic competition to promote learning and academic excellence Foster teamwork among students of all achievement levels Provide an opportunity for students to excel academically through team competition Improve written and oral communication skills, time management, literacy and study habits. Benefits Participation in the Academic Decathlon includes the following benefits: Strengthens self-esteem Develops school pride Fosters a team spirit and spirit of cooperation Improves academic achievement and skills. Success For over 20 years, CPS has placed in the top five in the USAD. In Chicago, 98% of decathletes graduate from high school and 70% matriculate into college. Academic Decathlon now services approximately 50 schools. Enrollment The program is open to any student that attends a school with an Academic Decathlon program. Students should contact their school's Academic Decathlon coach for the enrollment requirements at their school.

We wanted to create opportunities for people different from each other to participate in activities side by side and have positive learning experiences. We wanted to help people who had been traumatized to find a safe place to be themselves and be appreciated. We wanted to bring awareness to social justice issues. We wanted to decrease the bureaucracy of a non-profit for everyone to fit in and not have to go through so much in order to be a part of things.
