University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) students have played an important role in undocumented social movements, both in Chicago and in the U.S. Notably, they led the first National Coming Out of the Shadows Day, an event that transformed the immigrant rights debate. During this presentation, Barbara Sostaita, Esmeralda Arrizón-Palomera, and Jorge Mena Robles will share how they collected oral histories from past UIC student activists who participated in these movements from the mid-2000s to the 2010s to create a public digital archive. They will report on their process of preserving their oral histories and what these can teach us about organizing in the present.
Lunch will be provided!
