Gateway to the Great Outdoors (GGO) empowers students in under-resourced urban communities by providing equitable access to nature-based learning, hands-on STEAM education, and long-term mentorship. We serve primarily 4th–8th grade students in underserved schools, creating opportunities for them to explore the outdoors, strengthen academic and social-emotional skills, and develop confidence through experiential learning. Grounded in values of equity, curiosity, and community engagement, our work aligns with UIC’s commitment to expanding opportunity, advancing innovative educational practices, and serving the public good. By connecting students with mentors and transformative outdoor experiences, we strive to cultivate the next generation of environmentally conscious, empowered, and civically engaged leaders.
